Kids visiting Gracie NJ Academy

On Saturday, Feb 4th we've received the visit from the kids of the jiu jitsu program at Complete Martial Arts, in Roseland NJ. It was a great time! Our young visitors have been training with Brad Shipp, who has been a regular and dedicate student here at Gracie NJ Academy. They brought a huge desire and excitement with them and were very much welcomed by our kids who were also eager to meet and train with the new partners. The combination resulted in kids of all ages training hard and working together in a very friendly and productive manner.
As part of our commitment to the promotion of bringing people together on a positive note, we take this opportunity to thank Brad Shipp and the Complete Martial Arts Kids and Family for their visit and we leave the invitation open for them and the community for more training opportunities and occasions like this.

The Good Fight - NY Open

The Gracie New Jersey Competition Team started off the 2012 Tournament Year with a Bang at The Good Fight's New York Open Event on February 4th at Nyack College, in New York.

Skyler Brazdovic, the Academy's sole Teenage competing at that day, made us all proud by medaling both with the gi (3rd place) and without (2nd place) in the teens white belt under 141 pound divisions. Skyler set the tone for an awesome team performance by staying relaxed, listening to his coaches and teammates on the sidelines, and utilizing his impeccable technique.

Next to compete was Adam Skillin, who finally got a chance to compete at weight, although the division was very small. Adam bested his first opponent in the 3-man Purple <135.5 pound division in just over 30 seconds by quickly pulling his opponent into a triangle, which he finished after rolling his opponent onto his back and squeezing from the top. In Adam's second match, he took his opponent down, rolled him to the turtle position and set about taking the back, where he eventually finished with a choke to nail down the gold medal.

Cliff Stewart was the next competitor to show that hard work pays off. Cliff spoiled the day for his first opponent via repeated guard sweeps. Cliff lost a hard-fought finals match to take 2nd place in the Executive Medium-Heavy Blue Belt division.

Vinny Renda and Kevin Schuttler represented us well in the Adult Blue Belt 162-pound division. Kevin had 2 hard-fought very close matches in which his opponents managed to have their hands raised.
Vinny put on an absolute judo clinic, throwing all his opponents and heading to dominant positions on the ground. He kept a very strong pace, staying ahead on the score, winning 4 straight matches, with 3 submissions (2 chokes + 1 armbar) before settling for Second place in one of the day's toughest and biggest divisions.

Chris Bennett and Terren Suydam also had a lot of contenders to deal with, but took home 2nd and 4th place, respectively in the White Belt Adult Middleweight Division. Chris armbarred his way into the finals, winning 3 matches straight all with the same finish. Terren started out strong but ultimately 2 tough losses resulted in a still admirable 4th place finish.

Closing out the day, Tom Piotrowski smashed his way to a third place finish in the Purple Belt No-Gi Mens 162-pound division.

The Gracie New Jersey team ended up with a total of 62 team points for the day. What a great starting point for 2012! The Good Fight organization plans to hold its next tournament in Langhorne, PA on March 17th.

Congratulations to Master Royler Gracie on receiving the Red/Black Belt today from his brothers Rickson and Rolker. At Gracie NJ we are all proud and thankful to be his students and friends. We wish Royler all the best and may he continue his work of guiding, assisting and inspiring Jiu Jitsu practitioners all over the world.

We also take the opportunity to congratulate Jim Tavarez and Ryan Keane on receiving the purple belt while attending Royler's Jiu Jitsu camp in Rio de Janeiro this week. We hope they are enjoying their time in Brazil and we can't wait to have them back on the mats with us!

Meanwhile, here in NJ, we are very proud to announce the promotion of L.J. Reboli to the blue belt. L.J. is one of our competition team members and is very much accomplished at a very young age.

Wednesday Morning Jiu Jitsu Classes will resume on 01/25

Attention students there will be no Morning Jiu Jitsu on Wednesday, January 11th and Wednesday January 18th. Wednesday's Morning Jiu Jitsu classes will resume on 01/25, when coach Tavarez will be returning from the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Camp in Brazil with Master Royler Gracie.
Meanwhile, everyone is welcome to join us for Tuesday's morning MMA classes at 5am.

General Guidelines

· Competition will take place at Gracie Temecula-South, 32827 Temecula Parkway
Temecula, CA 92592

· Registration is flat $50 to compete in all qualified (age/weight/belt) divisions

· Registration ends at 7:30 PM Pacific Standard Time on Thursday, November 10, 2011

· Weigh-ins the day of competition; Kids: 7:00 to 8:00; Adults: 11:00am to 12:00pm

· Kids’ competition starts at 8:30 AM until roughly 11:30am. Self Defense will begin at 12:00pm. Adults’ jiu-jitsu divisions will begin at 12:30pm. Schedule subject to change based on number of competitors in each division. Full and final schedule will be posted at www.thegraciesandiego.com by November 11, 2011.

· All competitors will have the chance to fight a minimum of two matches.

· Only blue and white gis (same color top and bottom) are allowed.

· Points and scoring will be run according to IBJJF rules and regulations.

o The Self Defense competition will be scored by a panel of judges. See below for details.

Self Defense Details & Rules

· Instructors will receive a list of 25self defense moves covered under the Gracie Self Defense system that will serve as the basis for this competition

· For the competition, a judge will call out 12 moves at random from the aforementioned list for competitors to perform with a partner

· Competitors will wear one of these options ONLY:

1. Gi pants and academy T-shirt OR

2. Full gi

· Two Divisions:

1. White belts

2. Graduated belts

· A panel of judges will determine moves executed with the best level of detail, accuracy, and effectiveness.

1. The Self Defense competition will be scored by a panel of judges on a scale of 1 – 10 and the tally taken for each competitor to determine a winner. In the result of a tie, there will be one tie-breaker round with an additional 5 moves by each competitor performed for judging

Brown and black belts must submit their name, weight, stripes, and instructor/academy if they are interested in competing so that they may be set up in individual superfights or in several men or women divisions depending on amount of interest.

Sean Dunleavy - NBFL 2011 Slickest Submission Award

Congratulations to Sean Dunleavy for receiving the New Breed Fighters League 2011 "Slickest Submission" Award on the NBFL award ceremony held on October 15th in Atlantic City, NJ.

Many of Gracie New Jersey Academy students may not have seen Sean on the mats lately as he is taking some time off the mats to solely focus on his graduation program.
